Combating Corruption and Kleptocracy

Spotlighting corruption and the danger it poses to our economic and political systems and exploring the intersection between authoritarianism and kleptocracy.

Corruption and kleptocracy are the lifeblood of authoritarian regimes. They constrain opportunity and accountability and pose a major threat to democratic countries.

Those who live in rule-of-law-based societies have a responsibility to root out corruption and push back on the danger kleptocracies pose to other nations.

It’s important to shine a light on the intersection between kleptocracy and authoritarianism and the human cost of unchecked corruption.

The Bush Institute aims to:

  • Expose the Taliban’s corruption and spotlight foreign actors who benefit from human suffering in Afghanistan
  • Recommend ways to close sanction loopholes and leverage Russia’s frozen assets to aid Ukraine
  • Make it more difficult for corrupt autocrats to exploit the U.S. and international financial systems to launder their wealth and reputations
  • Encourage financial service industries to meaningfully enhance due diligence against foreign corruption
