Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal wrote a piece about Tanzanian entrepreneur Susan Mashibe, who was a speaker at the Bush Institute’s recent African First Ladies Summit in Dar es Salaam. Mashibe’s list of accomplishments is remarkable: Tanzania’s first female FAA-certified pilot; the Initiative for Global Development’s first Jennifer Potter Emerging Leaders Fellow; and Founder of Via Aviation – one of few fixed base operators for private air travel in Sub-Saharan Africa. Through innovation, determination and sheer courage, Mashibe has established a multimillion dollar aviation company in an emerging and largely male-dominated industry. Mashibe’s success illustrates that – through the advancement of education and economic empowerment – women play a vital role in the success and prosperity of every nation, which is a key belief of the Women’s Initiative here at the Bush Institute.
