February 1 marked the anniversary of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s return to Iran in 1979 and the start of a theocratic Iran that oppresses its citizens and fails to respect basic tenants of human dignity.
The Freedom Collection’s Mohsen Sazegara, a former Deputy Prime Minister of Iran, knew the Ayatollah well and joined the government of the Islamic Republic. He eventually became disillusioned with the regime and transformed into a leading opponent of the Ayatollah’s dictatorship. Watch below as Mohsen remembers confronting Khomeini about the use of torture in Iranian prisons:
