Arbor Day and the Laura W. Bush Native Texas Park

In honor of Arbor Day and National Volunteer Week, learn about the honey mesquite tree from Master Naturalist and Bush Center volunteer Jay Przborski in the Laura W. Bush Native Texas Park.

The honey mesquite tree, which is native to Texas and often seen on ranchlands, is Jay’s favorite tree, and it shows! Jay recommends planting this tree in your yard if you’re struggling to keep the grass under your trees alive and green. The honey mesquite tree isn’t a dense shade like a live oak, so the tree allows filtered sun to come through its canopy to aid in the growth of native Texas flowers and green grass.

We encourage you to take a walk through the park to have a closer look at this gorgeous tree.

Guided tours are available for free every Saturday at 10 a.m. through June 1. Weather permitting.
