Dallas, Texas – The George W. Bush Institute announced today that retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Jason J. Galui has joined the organization as the Director of the Veterans and Military Families program. In this role, Galui will lead the Bush Institute’s work to help veterans, servicemembers, and their loved ones make successful transitions to civilian life through research-driven policy recommendations.
“Jason Galui’s professional experiences as a servicemember and his transition to civilian life give him unique insights into the challenges facing our men and women who hang up the cloth,” said Mary Moore Hamrick, the Don Evans Family Managing Director of Domestic Policy at the Bush Institute. “Our veterans are trained leaders who are ready to make a difference in their communities. I am excited to see how our programming will continue to support them.”
Galui most recently served as a Professor of Practice in Executive Education at the Edwin L. Cox School of Business at SMU, where he led The Commercial Diplomacy Initiative. Before joining SMU, Galui was in the military with a service career spanning more than 20 years. During his military tenure, he served in Iraq and Afghanistan; advised General Martin E. Dempsey, the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Indo-Pacific issues, Afghanistan, and supporting military families; and played an integral role in reforming the Army’s transition programs for soldier and family transitions back to civilian communities. Galui also served as a key point of national security continuity between the Obama and Trump Administrations.
“I look forward to continuing my veteran and military service through the Bush Institute and to be joining an incredibly talented team,” Galui said. “There is an opportunity for states, businesses, universities, and the health care sector to better support the needs of our veterans. I’m excited to join my colleagues in this important work.”
Galui is a Fellow at the John G. Tower Center for Public Policy and International Affairs at SMU and a Visiting Scholar of the Eisenhower Working Group on Economic Statecraft at Texas A&M University’s Bush School of Government and Public Service. Galui earned a Master of Science in economics from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Science in economics from the United States Military Academy at West Point.
“I’m thrilled to have Jason joining us,” said David J. Kramer, Executive Director of the Bush Institute. “His stellar career, experience, and his service to the nation make him ideally suited to take the program, which already has a terrific team, to the next level.”
The Bush Institute’s Veterans and Military Families program helps veterans and their families make successful transitions through leadership programming and research-driven policy recommendations. Our policy recommendations focus on the three pillars of veteran transition: education, employment, and health and well-being. The Stand-To Veteran Leadership Program and Team 43 develop leaders among veterans and those who aim to serve them. More information can be found at www.bushcenter.org.
