Historic Bush-era HIV/AIDS initiative celebrates 20th anniversary

The George W. Bush Institute hosted the PEPFAR at 20 event in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 24, 2023, marking 20 years of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Since its inception in 2003, PEPFAR has saved 25 million lives and 5.5 million babies have been born HIV-free.

At the event, President George W. Bush, former President of Tanzania Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, 66th U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice, and Bill Gates discussed PEPFAR’s enormous impact worldwide. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and lead singer of U2 and co-founder of ONE and (RED), Bono, delivered virtual remarks.
