Laura Bush Book Club to discuss hope and storytelling with Heather Morris, author of the best-selling novel, The Tattooist of Auschwitz

Mrs. Laura Bush to provide introductory remarks

Dallas, Texas — On May 14, the Laura Bush Book Club, a special edition of Engage at the Bush Center presented by NexPoint and supported by H-E-B, will host a conversation about the best-selling novel, The Tattooist of Auschwitz. The discussion will include the real-life inspiration for the fiction story, how it came to be, and what lessons we can apply in today’s world. Mrs. Laura Bush will provide introductory remarks to announce the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries grant awardees and reveal her 2024 summer reading list.

Morris is the author of four novels, including The Tattooist of Auschwitz, an international bestseller that sold more than 12 million copies in 47 languages and is a newly released original series on Peacock. A natural storyteller, Morris was trained as a screenwriter before turning her attention to novels. Morris credits many of her heroic storylines, including the now-famous story of Lale Sokolov in The Tattooist of Auschwitz, to her experiences working in a social work department at a medical facility in Australia.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz tells the story of a prisoner of Auschwitz who is immediately put to work tattooing fellow prisoners. According to the author, “This story, full of beauty and hope, is based on years of interviews author Heather Morris conducted with real-life Holocaust survivor and Auschwitz-Birkenau tattooist Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov. It is heart-wrenching, illuminating, and unforgettable.”

Anne Wicks, the Don Evans Family Managing Director of Opportunity and Democracy at the Bush Institute, will moderate the conversation. Morris and Wicks will discuss the themes of the book, Morris’ relationship with the main character, and how the book instills hope even in the most difficult of circumstances.
